MARTUCCI Matteo
1943-2024
MAGNUS POIRIER INC.Remembering Matteo Martucci
It is with a mixture of fond memories and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matteo Martucci, a devoted teacher, cherished friend, and beloved family member.
Born in 1943, in the Molise region of Italy and then emigrating to Montreal in the 1960’s, Matteo was deeply proud of his Italian roots. He grew up in a tight-knit neighborhood where family and community came first. This sense of connection stayed with him throughout his life and shaped his approach to teaching and public service. Matteo earned his teaching degree while still in Italy, and then spent over 2 decades teaching high schools in the east end of Montreal. He had a unique way of blending his passion for education with his love of Italian culture, often sharing stories of his family's history with his students.
Matteo had a gift for making people feel at ease, whether in the classroom or outside it. His laid-back demeanor, sense of humor, and booming laugh made him approachable, while his sometimes-fiery approach made him a character to be reconned with. He believed that education was more than textbooks and exams; it was about inspiring curiosity and fostering respect. His colleagues knew him for his honest straightforward approach and willingness to lend an ear, while his students appreciated the way he made history come alive through his storytelling.
Matteo's classroom was more than a place for learning; it was a stage for creativity and discovery. Throughout his career, Matteo's impact on his students extended far beyond the classroom. He was known for organizing unforgettable school trips that took his students to cultural landmarks and historical sites. Whether it was a tour of Ottawa’s seat of government or an exploration of Rome’s most awe-inspiring landmarks, Matteo believed that education was best experienced through real-world connections.
Beyond the classroom, Matteo was a passionate promoter for the Italian community, working to preserve cultural heritage and strengthen bonds within the community. He organized events, celebrations and initiatives that brought people together, fostering a sense of unity and belonging.
As a young man, Matteo was also deeply engaged with local politics, fervently advocating for immigrant and English-language rights. He was known for his ability to bring people together, regardless of their differences. He championed projects that promoted cultural exchange, community festivals, and youth mentorship programs, and through his activism created some lasting change in his city and province.
Later in his career, Matteo had the unique opportunity to teach in Morocco, where he developed a deep respect for Arabic culture and the local community. He immersed himself in Moroccan traditions, learning a bit of the language and embracing the warmth and hospitality of his new friends. Matteo's time in Morocco was transformative, opening his eyes to the beauty of cultural exchange and the importance of building bridges across backgrounds.
Over the years, Matteo continued to foster these connections by welcoming newcomers from Arabic-speaking countries into his community. He was a constant source of support for immigrants, helping them navigate the challenges of adapting to a new country. Matteo’s home became a place where stories were shared, food was enjoyed, and friendships were built.
Throughout his life, his kitchen and home were always open to anyone in need of a good meal and great company.
Matteo is survived by his devoted brother and sister-in-law, Antonio and Theresa; and his nephews, Giuseppe, Anthony and Mario, and their partners (Katherine, Chantal, Shannon) and children (Amelia/Sophia, Eliana/Thomas, Zakory). The family wants to thank Radwan and all of Matteo’s friends and family who came together to support him in his desire to stay in his home in his twilight years despite his declining health.
Matteo leaves behind a legacy of friendship and service that spanned cultures, communities, and continents. His life was a testament to the power of kindness, compassion, and cultural understanding, reminding us that we are all connected by our shared humanity. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the SPCA of Montreal, or the Red Cross, in honor of Matteo's dedication to helping those in need.
The family will receive condolences on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday May 8 as of 11:30 a.m. at Magnus Poirier Funeral Complex, 10300 Pie IX Blvd. A ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 1 p.m. in the chapel at the Magnus Poirier Funeral Complex and from there immediate family will depart to gather at the gravesite at Notre-Dame des Neiges Cemetery, 4601, Chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges, Section V, # 8726.
